Valley West Maternity Suites receives Level II nursery designation
August 13, 2009
The Illinois Department of Public Health has designated Valley West Maternity Suites as a Level II perinatal facility for maternal and newborn care.
The designation means staff expertise and training, equipment, and policies and procedures are in place to care for maternal complications and more complex births, especially newborns in mild to moderate respiratory distress, said Pamela Duffy, Vice President, Patient Care Services and Medical Staff Office.
“Key elements to earning this designation were expanding and providing specialized training for our respiratory care and nursing staffs. Certification in neonatal resuscitation has always been required for our OB nurses. The Level II designation, however, lets the public know that the level of staff expertise is more advanced now. We also ramped up 24/7 diagnostic imaging and laboratory services,” Duffy said.
The review process to determine Valley West’s readiness for Level II designation included an onsite visit by representatives from IDPH, the Northwest Illinois Perinatal Center at Rockford Memorial Hospital, and the Obstetrics Department Chair of Chicago’s Rush University Medical Center. Dr. Ann West, Dr. Brett Cassidy, and Dr. James Hawkins, all Sandwich OB/GYNs, also participated in the review and provided expert guidance to the Maternity Suites staff along the way.
“We are excited to be able to offer the Level II services to patients in the area. Now we can offer even more moms and babies a personalized patient experience. Valley West offers personalized care, and the latest in technology,” West said. Drs. Hawkins and Cassidy feel that patients will be excited to learn about the new designation. “This is a great addition to our community,” Hawkins said.
“The Level II designation is the final element in our efforts to provide comprehensive obstetrics care for the community, the same level of care available at our sister hospital, Kishwaukee, in DeKalb,” Duffy said.
